Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Filming By The Sea with Husband Brad Pitt: “It Was Heavy, but Honest”

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt teamed up for By The Sea, the world took notice. Not just because it marked their first on-screen reunion since Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but because the film was deeply personal, emotionally raw — and made while they were, in real life, newly married.

Now, Jolie is reflecting on that experience with striking honesty.

Speaking about directing and starring alongside her then-husband Brad Pitt, Angelina described the process as “both cathartic and difficult.” The 2015 drama, which she also wrote, follows a troubled couple attempting to salvage their marriage during a getaway to a remote French coastal village. For a couple who had just said “I do,” it was a bold artistic choice.

“I wrote it before we were married,” Angelina revealed. “It wasn’t meant to be autobiographical, but of course when you’re dealing with themes of grief, distance, and reconciliation, you bring pieces of yourself into it.”

Filming such emotionally intense scenes with someone she deeply loved was a challenge, she admitted. “It was a strange honeymoon,” she once joked in an interview — but behind the humor was a layer of truth. By The Sea forced both actors to explore the darker corners of a relationship, together, while being surrounded by cameras.

“We had to be brutally honest with each other,” she said. “It was heavy, but there was a beauty in doing that kind of work with someone you trust completely. We challenged each other — not just as actors, but as people.”

Angelina also explained that the film was a way of processing emotion and communicating things that don’t always come out in everyday conversation. “Sometimes it’s easier to express pain and vulnerability through characters than in real life,” she said. “Art can be healing.”

Though By The Sea received mixed reviews for its pacing and minimalist storytelling, many praised Jolie’s fearless direction and the film’s haunting emotional depth. For her, the project was never about commercial success — it was about honesty, intimacy, and creating something raw.

“People assumed it was about our marriage,” she said. “But really, it was about exploring grief — and how two people can find their way back to each other, or not.”

Looking back now, By The Sea feels like a time capsule: a window into a moment when two of Hollywood’s biggest stars were navigating love, art, and vulnerability — both on and off screen.
